A self-clinching standoff, also known as a pressure riveting stud or nut post, is a type of fastener used primarily on sheet metal, thin plates, chassis, and cabinets. It features a hexagonal head at one end and a cylindrical body at the other, with a groove separating the two sections. The interior of the standoff contains an internal thread.
During installation, the hexagonal head is pressed into a pre-punched hole in the sheet metal-typically slightly larger than the outer diameter of the cylindrical body. This pressing action causes plastic deformation around the hole, forcing the deformed metal to flow into the groove of the standoff. As a result, the standoff is securely riveted to the sheet, creating a strong, fixed internal thread for subsequent assembly.
